Portsmouth house explosion: Neighbors in temporary accommodation after being evacuated following a blast in the North End


The explosion occurred on Nelson Avenue, North End yesterday afternoon and two people were taken to hospital.

Residents were evacuated from the street following the explosion.

However, while the majority have since been allowed to return home, neighbors of the two houses on either side of the blast site are to remain in temporary accommodation – but have been allowed to return to collect some belongings. personal earlier.

The news returned to the scene on Nelson Avenue this morning and residents spoke of “absolute carnage” yesterday.

Shaunie, who has lived on the streets her entire life, added: “We initially thought it was a car crash. It was absolute carnage – the kind of thing you see on your TV, not on your doorstep – at most, you might see motorcycles racing down the road or a drunken brawl.

Several residents said everyone had gathered to help the residents of the house in the center of the blast.

Shaunie added, “It’s not the type of road where everyone knows everyone, but we’ve all come together.”

Nelson Avenue resident Michael Knight said: “I am shocked to see the damage. Never seen anything like it. The massive detonation shook the houses.

Investigations have started into the cause of the explosion.
