In the theater world, there is a long tradition of leaving a ghost light on the stage after the other lights are out, and everyone is gone for the night. For the superstitious: the one-light bulb, usually a simple floor lamp, is supposed to keep ghosts away. The most practical reason for them? To make sure no one gets hurt (i.e. falls off the stage) in the dark.
But when local developers Kevin and Sherri Daugherty walked into New Hope’s historic Bucks County Playhouse in 2011 – it had been abandoned for over a year since it closed – and discovered a phantom light shining on the stage, they took it as a promising sign. They bought the multi-story structure, reopened it in 2012, and then set out to renovate the nearby run-down Playhouse Inn into a brand new property.

After years of hard work and countless setbacks, the Daugherts unveiled Ghost Light Inn in August 2019. And there are plenty of reasons Ghost Light is so special, despite there being plenty of great accommodations available in New Hope – without talk about Bucks County.
âThe main thing is our central location,â says Managing Director Jimmy Nikodellis. âEverything in town is within walking distance. We are also directly on the promenade, so you can go down and stand on the river. And because Ghost Light has just 12 rooms, the boutique luxury property maintains a wonderfully comfortable and intimate vibe.

Each bedroom is uniquely configured, so some feature high gabled ceilings while others have Juliet balconies overlooking the Delaware River. What they all share, however, is a slim and beautiful design (imagine lots of dark wood, earthy neutrals, and plush beds with leather headboards), thoughtful touches like welcome chocolates. of Sciascia Confections and custom-blended SkyRoast coffee – both are vendors located nearby in the Ferry Market – and rightfully so, Ghost Lights. You’ll find one in every room, along with photos of the light the Daughertys discovered in the Bucks County Playhouse.
Unlike many accommodations in the area, Ghost Light Inn is incredibly dog ââfriendly.

Unlike most Bucks County accommodations, Ghost Light Inn is pet-friendly and will welcome your pooch with a memory foam bed, bowls, treats, and trash bags. This love of pets extends to the inn’s signature restaurant, Stella, whose name was inspired by the Daugherty’s rescue pit bull.

Like many of Ghost Light’s rooms, Stella has lovely water views. And under the direction of Executive Chef Michael O’Halloran, the kitchen features locally sourced, ingredient-focused, crowd-pleasing platters like spaghetti pie, Parisian gnocchi, and County Peking duck. Berks. Because this is one of the liveliest restaurants in town, the recommendations come highly recommended.
But arguably the best reason to book Ghost Light Inn is ease. In an age when there is constant pressure to always do something or go somewhere, Ghost Light offers a centrally located and beautifully appointed stay in the heart of one of the most charming cities in the country. What you decide to do after you arrive is up to you. “You can stay or go, you can do nothing or do everything”, explains Nikodellis. âBecause we have a restaurant and we’re right by the water next to the Playhouse, we’re almost in a little bubble. All we want customers to do is come and relax.
