Colorado sees drop in COVID vaccine appointments

DENVER (KDVR) – According to COVID data from the Colorado COVID website, the state is seeing a steady decline in the amount of vaccines given to residents.

“There is a steady downward trend in the daily doses administered,” said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist.

Data shows the state experienced its largest peak in vaccines administered between late March and April. The decline began in late April and early May.

“I had the impression that the universe intervened. No one submitted an intake form, ”said Sara Walsh, organizer of the Vaccine Helpers group.

The Vaccine Helpers group has been working since February to help make appointments for older people in the community who have had difficulty making their vaccine appointments. The group, led by volunteers, helped mentor nearly 6,000 people and made 3,403 vaccine appointments.

“Colorado did a great job, the leaders did a great job. If you want a vaccine, you can just go in and get it now, ”Walsh said.

Dr Fernando Holguin, pulmonologist and intensive care specialist at UCHealth, said that currently only half of Colorado residents have been vaccinated with one or both doses of a COVID vaccine.

“We are starting to see for the first time that there are more niches available than people asking for the vaccine,” Holguin said.

He said the state had already seen an increase in the number of people who wanted the vaccine and now it’s the group of people who have sat on the fence to wonder whether or not they will be vaccinated.

“You may experience moderate complications from the vaccine, but it’s not even close to being sick with COVID,” Holguin said.

Holguin said some of the main reasons people hesitate to get vaccinated are side effects and unknown long-term complications. But he said people should be more concerned about COVID.

“With 30% of the country hesitant, we may be dealing with COVID for the foreseeable future,” Holguin said.
