Bucket list vacation bookings are booming as we plan our post-containment dream getaways.

One-time breaks are up about 50%, according to a specialist.

Susan Macaulay, who runs a Not Just Travel franchise, books trips to Everest, New York and Florida, and to see the Northern Lights. Harley-Davidson rides on US Route 66 are also popular.

Sue said: “Bucket list vacations were 1% or 2% of bookings before the pandemic, but in the past few weeks they have exploded.”

Sue, of Stockton-on-Tees, Co Durham, says bookings are increasing not only for next summer but for 2023 as well.

She added, “We organize limousine transfers, petals on the bed, iced champagne in the room, the perfect view… whatever our clients ask for. I tell them personally about the reason for their trip.

“More and more people are saying they want to tick a box on their bucket list.”

Cancer survivor David Hughes spends over £ 10,000 riding Route 66 in a Harley-Davidson. David and his wife Karen, an NHS nurse, will travel 2,400 miles through eight states in 16 days.

Father of two David of Heighington, County Durham, who runs his own driver training business, said: “This is a dream of a lifetime.

“You never know what’s going on around the corner. I was a survivor of esophageal cancer and know how lucky I am to be alive.

“I’m 55 now and I said to my wife ‘If we don’t do it now, we never will.”
